Seresto Collar Safety: Read It & Decide For Yourself

seresto- collar -safety

Lately, I have been getting Emails asking questions about the safety of the Seresto collar. Well, I have been working in the pet health care Industry for 10 years and have understood one thing that treatments don’t work on personal opinions. I might advise that the treatment is safe because the treatment works effectively on my pet while the person living in the house next to me can find the treatment gross. Hence, my opinion is not the correct thing to believe in.

However, I will still put a picture in front of you for you to contemplate for yourself, whether it is safe or not. So, let’s start.

Seresto is a long-lasting flea and tick collar for dogs and cats that provides protection from fleas for 8 months and from ticks for 4 months. It also kills chewing lice and aids in the control of flea larvae in the pet’s surrounding.

A product’s safety is determined by 3 things-

  1. Safety Of The Product As Per Company And Government
  2. Proven Safe By Another Reputed Organizations & the most important one
  3. Customer reviews

Let’s Go One By One And Understand

1) Safety Of The Product As Per Company And Government

According to the product label of the Seresto collar on Bayer’s website, the collar is safe to be used on puppies more than 7 weeks of age. Here is what the product label says –

As with any product, consult your veterinarian before using this product on debilitated, aged, breeding, pregnant, or nursing animals. Individual sensitivities, while rare, may occur after using ANY pesticide product for pets. Rarely, mild application site reactions may occur, such as scratching, redness, and hair loss, which usually recover within 1 to 2 weeks without the need for collar removal. In some cases, temporary collar removal and bathing may be recommended until symptoms have disappeared. In very rare cases, application site reactions such as dermatitis, inflammation, eczema or lesions may occur. In these instances, collar removal is recommended. If signs persist or become more severe, consult a veterinarian immediately. If your animal is on medication, consult your veterinarian before using this or any other product. If your dog is experiencing an adverse event, contact your veterinarian and call 1-800-422-9874.

The instruction clearly mentions that you need to consult your vet before using this collar and there is a very rare chance of side effects because every pet is special and has its own sensitivities towards the ingredients.

Here’s a fact –

The Head of Marketing at Bayer Animal Health, Oliver Kohlhaas also uses Seresto collar on his dog named Calypso. He described the WHY and HOW of the product in his article that can be found on https://animalhealth.bayer.com/blog/lessons-learned.

Here is an excerpt from his blog –

I am the Head of Marketing for Bayer Animal Health, so I make a rational decision based on complete information. I choose it because Seresto kills fleas and repels and kills ticks quickly, works for up to eight months, and is waterproof. I also have the privilege to know a lot more about the product, data on the prevention of transmission of vector-borne diseases, product safety and the high level of user satisfaction and peer recommendation. All that data supports my decision, even if we do not use or share it for promotion. After all, I choose Seresto because it is a great product.

Moreover, the collar is approved by the government which means that the collar is tested thoroughly and that’s the reason Bayer is able to sell and advertise the product.

2) Proven Safe By Another Reputed Organizations

According to research by Parasites and Vectors, that studied efficacy and safety of Seresto and Dimpylat collar and published on National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), a reputed organization’s website. The collar’s ingredients – imidacloprid & flumethrin were found safe to be used on both dogs and cats with minor issues at the application site in rare cases. Moreover, there were no mechanical issues with the collar as the Seresto flea collar comes with safety release technology.

The test was conducted on 232 cats and 271 dogs suffering from flea and tick infestations. The flea collar was found 98.3% & 96.7% efficacious against fleas in cats and dogs respectively for 8 long months. Against ticks, the collar was 98.4% & 94.7%efficacious in cats and dogs for straight 8 months. However, Seresto is still recommended to be used for 4 months for ticks.

“ Received My Flea Collars. Got them Yesterday. My Dogs Have Not  Scratched At All Since Putting The  Collars On. Lasts Longer And Can Find Fecky Happy With No Fleas. Thanks “

Magic!

“I have used these collars on my dogs for three years and wouldn’t trade it for anything else on the market! Living in the southeast, I have fought fleas and ticks for years. I finally gave this product a try and am glad I did (my dogs are glad, too!) And, not nearly the expense of monthly pills and drops from the past. Try it one time and you will never use anything else.”

Emily-

Long term treatment of fleas and ticks

“Just tie the collar around your pooch’s neck, follow the safety instructions and there you are free of all the fleas and ticks present on your doggie….safe in water too so you can easily bathe your dog.”

Read the product label carefully and use the treatment. People often don’t follow the instructions on the product label and end up torturing their pets with the side effects and then blame the company or the treatment. The label already says that you need to consult your vet before putting it on your pet. So, please read the pack inserts and you will discern that your pet is flea and tick free for 8 long months. It also repulses parasites which give you the freedom to take your pet out in the open for long strolls or camping at any time of the year irrespective of the season.

The information is now at your disposal to understand and make your decision about the safety of the Seresto flea and tick collar.
